Alliteration Is More Appealing

Stuart Bell 2 min read

Alliteration is more appealing. It can be the secret to a scroll-stopping book title.

I had a great call recently, running book titles with a client. It's one of the best parts of the process because it really helps people dial in ideas. Even if people are stuck dialing in their audience, the clients they want to help most, running book titles gives them a gut feel for what they want to say.

One noticeable difference is how some titles just stand out more than others.

Feel the Difference

Take these two examples:

"Ready to Sell? Your Guide to Business Exit Planning" "Answering the Critical Questions for a Rewarding Business Transition"

And then:

"Should I Stay or Should I Sell? The Business Owner's Exit Dilemma" "Decoding the Decision-Making Process for Your Business Transition"

This is early in the process, so we're not yet worried about the exact words. But do you see how they feel different?

Humans are wired to respond to alliteration, rhyming, and a pentatonic rhythm to words. It's why jingles or choruses stick in our minds.

When you're picking a book title (or writing a post) that starts a conversation, pick something that resonates, but then look for something that appeals more to the musical part of your brain.

By the way, this even works for people like me who have no musical ability.
