There's a mindset shift worth learning from professional writers, even if you're not one.
Don't get caught in the Curse of Knowledge.
Having a book to get more clients is far more about being the author of an idea and starting a conversation than it is about writing. But there are still insights to pick up from people who write for a living.
The Trap
Michael Mauboussin, a professional writer who often tackles subjects he has to research from scratch, describes an idea from psychologist Steven Pinker: the curse of knowledge. The deeper you go into a subject, the harder it becomes to remember what it felt like not to know it. You lose the ability to see your own expertise from the outside.
This is just as applicable to us as business owners creating content. Can you remember to share your deep knowledge in a way that's accessible?
What we need to do as writers is to have that deep understanding but then somehow retain the clarity of thought and empathy for a reader who doesn't have that same depth, so they can still understand what we're saying.
What to Do About It
Don't get caught up thinking you need to be a writer. But take the best-practice ideas. Assume less. Explain more. Write like you're talking to someone who respects your expertise but doesn't share it yet.
Be the author of an idea and get your book out there, starting conversations.
